After removing the distinction between fixed line rates and mobile rates with the introduction of OneIndia tariffs, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd is now working towards removing all other major differentials between the two platforms of telecom services.

First on the list is the plan to extend the pre-paid facility to its landline users, followed by other services such as cheaper SMSs and downloadable ringtones.

The company is of the view that the move towards pre-paid on landlines is a major initiative and will represent a radical strategy shift to boost revenues from its 38 million fixed line customers.

"This is next after 'OneIndia' and requires re-haul of many segments in the company. Besides, this facility is not possible on our present network and, therefore, BSNL has started work on a new network platform.

The first phase of this projects is likely to be ready in about three months," a senior BSNL executive told Business Standard. "Additionally, we are also in the process of installing new equipment to the back-end of our existing network to integrate the two platforms when they become operational," the official added.

Company executives said the facility of pre-paid on mobiles will be offered on the intelligent network platform, similar to that which is being used for its broadband services. This facility was likely to be offered on a pilot basis in metros, before it was extended to all major cities and other parts of the country, they added.

BSNL executives also added that following the commissioning of the new network, the PSU would roll-out a series of features that were currently available only to its mobile customers.

"Downloadable ring tones, play back tones, full-fledged SMS, bill flash and updates and various other features are being proposed. It is, however, too early to provide specific details, but we will be able to compete with cellular services," an executive said.

BSNL is also in the process of putting in place a new marketing strategy to promote new offerings to its fixed line users.
