TCS may hire 18,000 this year

Tata group Chairman Ratan Tata on Wednesday said Tata Consultative Services, the country's largest information technology and ITES company, was likely to employ around 18,000 people this year.

TCS, which requires more people to handle its growing business, witnessed an 8.7 per cent annual attrition rate at the end of the second quarter. The figure was 8.2 per cent at the end of the first quarter, the lowest in the industry.

Sources said around 1,220 employees left the company in the first quarter and 1,300 in the second quarter. The company has a total work force of 53,329, of which 23 per cent are women.

TCS is on an acquisition spree. It had announced the acquisition of Comicrom for $23 million (about RsĀ 105 crore) on Tuesday.

Comicrom is the market leader in banking and pensions business process outsourcing in Chile. TCS has been focusing on Tier I educational institutions for campus recruitment.
