Pointing at the value arbitrage in drug discovery that India offered, the government has invited the United States companies to forge partnerships with domestic biotech firms for research and development.

"The government is taking several initiatives to create an environment of innovation and research in the country," M K Bhan, secretary, Department of Biotechnology, said at a CII session on 'The way ahead for partnerships with Indian biotech' in San Francisco.

India was committed to the World Trade Orgainsation and TRIPS for protection of intellectual property rights, and the government would soon put in place a single window system for biotech products, a CII release quoted Bhan as saying.

"India offers tremendous opportunities for the US companies in drug discovery & development and Indian companies can become true partners by bringing value and intellectual capital," Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, chairman and managing director, Biocon India Ltd, said.
