Railways offers industry free bio-diesel technology

The Indian Railways is ready to provide the technology to extract bio diesel from Jetropha and Neem free of cost to any entrepreneur. Southern Railway Chief Motive Power Engineer R P Mishra conveyed the Railways' decision, while speaking to the press in Tiruchirappalli on May 26.

Mishra said the bio diesel production unit at the Loco works at Perambur in Chennai had the capacity to produce 1,000 litres of bio diesel per day and they were ready to pass on the technology to any entrepreneur free of cost.

He said the Perambur unit had the facility to extract bio diesel from seeds like Jetropha and Neem.

The unit also had the technology to convert any used or waste vegetable oil into bio diesel, he said adding that by special arrangements with some hotels and restaurants, it was able to collect about 200 litres of used cooking oils in a week.
