Setting the ambitious target of becoming the third largest two-wheeler maker in the world, Bajaj Auto Ltd on Thursday announced entry into the Indonesian market with the launch of its 180 cc Pulsar DTS-i motorcycle.

"Our entry into Indonesia is part of our global plans to help us move from the 4th largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the world to the 3rd largest manufacturer," Sanjiv Bajaj, Bajaj Auto Ltd, executive director said.

He said as part of the plan, the company was launching the hugely successful Bajaj Pulsar DTSi in Indonesia, marking the entry of Bajaj Auto in the South East Asian country.

Bajaj's Indian rival Hero Honda is world largest motorcycle manufacturer by volume. The company is launching two variants of Pulsar in cast wheel and spoke wheel, targetting young, urban, upwardly mobile and middle class bike enthusiasts.

"The growth of sport motorcycle segment in Indonesia has been steady in the last few years at an average of about 8 per cent from total motorcycle sales. There is still a big opportunity for this segment to expand," D K Banerjee, director (marketing & sales) Bajaj Auto Indonesia said.

Bajaj has appointed main dealers in Jabotabek and East Java in the first phase, the statement said, adding by the end of the year, there will be 50 service centres across Java. As a first promotional step, Bajaj has decided to sponsor the Jakarta Motor Show as main sponsors, it said.
