The Maharashtra government decided to increase tax for commercial and tourist vehicles by amending Mumbai Motor Vehicle Act 1958.
"The commercially used heavy vehicles and tourist vehicles from outside the state would have to pay more tax as per their weight and capacity of carrying passengers," an official from the transport department said.
The decision was taken at the state cabinet meeting in Mumbai. It was chaired by Chief Minister Ashok Chavan. There has been no change in tax structure of the vehicles since December 1, 1997, the official said.
The increased tax would be applicable for private buses, vehicles used at driving training schools, tourist cars and jeeps from outside the state, the official said.
Vehicles weighing upto 750 kg would have to pay Rs 800 and Rs 1200 for vehicle weighing over 750 kg, he said.
Vehicles having a passenger capacity of between six to 12 would have to pay Rs 1500 per person, over 12 passengers, Rs 1700 and over 24 passengers, Rs 1900 per person, the official said.
