August 17, 2005 18:03 IST
Austrian Airlines is all set to begin services from Vienna to Mumbai from September 1 with five flights a week.

The inaugural return economy fare to Vienna has been fixed at Rs 19,900, he added.

The airline, which is already operating daily Airbus A330 services to Delhi, will link Mumbai with a Boeing 767 with two-class configuration - 39 business and 209 economy class seats, executive vice president (sales and passenger systems) Christian Schmid said on Wednesday.

He said the airline had sought permission to operate to Mumbai nearly five years ago and is hopeful that with the new aviation policy in place, it would get to fly to a third destination, either Bangalore or Chennai.

Austrian Airlines, which is a member of the Star Alliance, is hopeful to switch over to Boeing 767s to Delhi by the end of 2006, he added.

Schmid said there were no plans to recruit Indian cabin crew on board due to strict labour laws of European Union.

The flight to Mumbai would arrive on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 10 pm and leave at 12.50 am on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, Country Manager (India) Bernhard Baeck said.

The Austrian government has 39 per cent stake and institutional investors over 50 per cent stake in the Austrian Airlines group, which consists of Austrian Airlines, Lauda Air and Austrian Arrows with a total fleet of 101 aircraft.
