Aurobindo Pharma has received licences from Bristol Myers Squibb Co to market two anti-AIDS drugs in 49 countries. The licences are for Stavudine and Didanosine, Aurobindo said.

The licence allows the company to market the two drugs in countries like South Africa, which is the worst affected country from HIV/AIDS, a company statement said in Mumbai Friday. These drugs constitute a $100-million market in South Africa alone, company executives said.

The licence granted would help increase access of antiretroviral drugs for the benefit of people in countries where HIV/AIDS is affecting the population especially in the younger generation, it said.

The company said the US Food and Drug Administration had given a tentative approval to its version of an anti-AIDS combination drug consisting of Lamivudine, Zidovudine and Efavirenz.

Stavudine capsules in the strengths of 30 mg and 40 mg and stavudine oral solution 1 mg/ml are already approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, the company said.

The company's shares rose nearly 2 per cent to Rs 620 in at the Bombay Stock Exchange.
