Himachal to grow popular American apples

Himachal Pradesh is gearing up to grow United States' most popular variety of apples in the higher reaches of Lahaul Valley.

Growing of American apples is being tried out for the first time in the valley. The adjoining Spiti Valley grows local apple varieties.

The lowest farmland in Lahaul and Spiti is at least 11,000 feet above sea level and goes up to around 15,500 feet. Compared to Spiti, the Lahaul Valley receives more snowfall. So growing apples is a greater challenge.

According to a statement from the state government, around 2,668

saplings have been imported from the US which include scarlet, galegala, granny smith, super chief and red fuji varieties.

Each plant will cost the government Rs.850.

The release said around 445 applications from farmers keen to try out the new American varieties.

Shimla district is the heartland of apple production in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh and accounts for around 80 percent of the entire apple produce.

American varieties were introduced here in the early 20th century.
