AirAsia India HQ may move out from Chennai

May 31, 2014 09:17 IST

AirAsia aircraftTo a question on whether the airline planned to move its headquarters from Chennai, chief executive Mittu Chandilya said, “Nothing immediately but you should not be shocked if we do.”

The possible change in the airline’s earlier decision is apparently due to various factors, the key being its relationship with the state government.

Other states are a lot more interested and excited in having it.

“We are not looking at any financial help from the state governments; it is all about relationship,”

said Chandilya. For example, safety is an issue at Chennai airport and AirAsia India says safety is key.

“Considering the accidents that have taken place in recent times, the environment (safety) is not conducive here,” said Chandilya.

“Imagine a Chief Minister picks up a call and say they are excited for having us in their state,” he said.

He was referring to other state governments showing more interest in hosting the airline as against Tamil Nadu.
