AEPC hires SA trainer to improve trade

Apparel Export Promotion Council has hired a South Africa-based trainer to apprise garment exporters of new ways to increase their productivity level by holding workshops in the country.

"For the first time, we have involved a South Africa-based trainer, Rodger Thomas, from 'Method Workshop'. He will reveal the new ways of improving to apparel exporters' productivity that will further assist in augmenting garment export," AEPC secretary general K K  Jalan said.

Indian garment exporters' productivity is far below that of other countries' like the US and China.

"India's productivity is 35-40 per cent whereas US and China's productivity level stand at 80-85 per cent and 60-65 per cent respectively," Jalan said in a garment exporters meet in Ludhiana.

AEPC is aiming at garment export of US $25 billion by 2010 and is planning
to open two more Apparel International Mart in Bangalore and Mumbai.

"We plan to open two more marts in near future in Bangalore and Mumbai. We have already set up a center at Gurgaon with an investment of Rs 65 crore (Rs 650 million). It will be a display center where international buyers can come and see latest apparels to source from India. Several exporters such as Orient Craft have acquired places in this mart," said Jalan.

AEPC is also contemplating setting up a Research and Development centre in Gurgaon, said Jalan.

The council, which also has training centres, plans to open new centres in Kanpur, Bhubaneswar and Surat and one near Delhi, said Jalan.
