The Asian Development Bank will give a $20-million technical assistance loan to India for carrying out reforms in the judicial system.

"The TA programme has already been approved. We are working on the core system," John Samy, ADB deputy director general in charge of South Asia said.

He described the TA as small but significant for improving administration of justice in India.

"It is important for creating an enabling environment," Samy said.

ADB had cleared the proposal for technical assistance programme in the third week of March.

The assistance by the Manila-based bank will strengthen the legal framework and step up the system's efficiency, which is crucial to promote economic growth.

India has one of the highest number of pending cases in the world because of lack of infrastructure.

The multilateral development financial institution is participating aggressively in India's infrastructure development and capability creation in various sectors.
