The controversy over the Tata Nano plant in Singur refuses to die down.

Minutes after reports emanating from West Bengal indicated that the Singur impasse had finally come to an end with Tata Motors [Get Quote] 'agreeing to give land,' the Tatas have expressed distress at the 'limited clarity on the outcome of the discussions between the state government of West Bengal and the representatives of the agitators in Singur.'

The company, in a statement issued on Monday, said that 'in view of the limited clarity, Tata Motors is obliged to continue the suspension of construction and commissioning work at the Nano plant.'

'We will review our stated position only if we are satisfied that the viability of the project is not being impinged, the integral nature of the mother plant and our ancillary units are being maintained and all stakeholders are committed to developing a long-term congenial environment for smooth operations of the plant in Singur,' the statement further said.

Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee had initially asked for 400 acres of land from the prestigious Nano project.

After three days of intensive parleys with the Left Front government at the Raj Bhavan, mediated by Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi, Mamata on Sunday had announced that the state government had agreed to give 300 acres of land from within the Tata premises and 100 acres from somewhere nearby.
