The corpoation of Coimbatore on Wednesday launched 24-hour on-line system for paying various taxes, using credit and debit cards.
The on-line facility to pay property and water taxes, during working hours, has already been introduced in the corporation long ago.
Mayor R Venkatachalam told reporters that the new simplified system would be a boon to the people, as it worked 24-hours and they can pay taxes sitting at their homes.
The corporation has tied up with ICICI Bank [Get Quote] for the system and 1.85 per cent service tax would be charged for those paying by credit cards.
On tax collection, Venkatachalam said the corporation has collected Rs 105 crore (Rs 1.05 billion), which was about 75 per cent of total taxes.
Since the officials and councillors were moving door-to-door appealing to the defaulters to pay taxes, the remaining 25 per cent would be collected before March 31, he said.
Venkatachalam also said that 85 water connections have been snapped, for non-payment of taxes for long.
