Loan waiver brings relief to farmers: Maha Governor

Terming the Centre's decision regarding loan waiver to farmers a historic and revolutionary one, Maharashtra Governor S C Jamir said it has brought great relief to them.

Jamir said this while addressing the joint session of the state Legislature which started on Monday in the presence of the Legislature Assembly and Council members. 

"The Centre's decision will benefit a number of debt-ridden farmers in the state," said Jamir. He also elaborated on the total amount of funds spent so far under relief packages.

"Of the total outlay of Rs 3,750 crore (Rs 37.5 billion) of prime minister's package for three years, the expenditure is 2,338 crore (Rs 23.38 billion) and for the state package outlay of Rs 1,075 crore (Rs 10.75 billion), the expenditure is Rs 1,109.43 crore (Rs 11.09 billion)," he said.

Agricultural loans to 9.37 lakh farmers amounting to Rs 1,418 crore (Rs 14.18 billion) have been rescheduled and interest amounting to Rs 837 crore (Rs 8.37 billion) has been waived off, the Governor said.

In pursuance of the National Policy for Accelerating Growth Rate of agricultural sector, the state government has achieved four per cent annum growth rate during the 11th Five Year Plan, he said.

Jamir announced that the government has decided to establish export facility centre for better realisation for agricultural products like fruits and vegetables.

The state Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme is being extended to all the districts from April 1, he said.

Regarding irrigation sector, Jamir said the financial backlog in the sector has been reduced from 5,501 crore (Rs 55.01 billion) to 3,217 crore (Rs 32.17 billion). He also hoped the backlog will be reduced futher for the year 2007-08 by Rs 1,000 crore (Rs 10 billion).
