The United States-based telecommunications major Motorola Inc on Monday appointed Sanjay Jha as its co-chief executive officer alongside Greg Brown.

The company has appointed Jha as its Co-CEO for its handset devision. He would be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company's mobile devices business and report directly to the board, said a company statement.

In March, the telecom major has expressed its interest to spin-off its handset division into a separate entity.

Greg Brown, Motorola's earlier CEO would now serve as Co-chief executive officer of Motorola and would be heading the other two divisions of the company.

Brown has been named chief executive officer of Motorola's broadband mobility solutions business which consists of the home & networks mobility and enterprise mobility solutions businesses.

"Sanjay's technical expertise and industry experience make him ideally suited to lead mobile devices," said chairman of the Motorola board David Dorman.

Brown and Jha would share responsibility for Motorola as it moves towards separating into two independent, publicly-traded companies, added the release.

"As Co-CEOs, Greg and Sanjay will build on the significant changes and solid progress achieved at Motorola and the mobile devices business under Greg's leadership during the last seven months," added Dorman.

Earlier, Jha was the chief operating officer of Qualcomm and was responsible for overseeing corporate research and development and Qualcomm Flarion Technologies (QFT).
