India set for record foodgrain output

India is set for record production in food grains, sugarcane and cotton, according to the estimates released by the ministry of agriculture.

The estimate said the total foodgrains production in 2006-07 will at 216.13 million tonnes. It comprises 92.76 million tonnes of rice, 74.89 million tones of wheat, 34.25 million tonnes of coarse cereals and 14.23 million tonnes of pulses.

Oilseeds production during 2006-07 is estimated at 23.88 million tonnes with groundnut estimated at 4.91 million tonnes, soyabean at 8.86 million tonnes and rapeseed & mustard at 7.10 million tonnes.

Production of cotton is estimated at 22.70 million bales of 170 kg each.

Production of sugarcane is estimated at 345.31 million tonnes during 2006-07.

The latest assessment is based on the feedback received from the states and validated with the information available from other sources.

As compared to 2005-06, rice has recorded an increase of about 1 million tonnes, wheat has recorded an increase of 5.5 million tonnes and pulses have recorded an increase of 0.8 million tonnes (mainly contributed by gram).

Among the commercial crops, sugarcane has recorded an increase of about 64 million tonnes and cotton has recorded an increase of 4.2 million bales over 2005-06.

The estimates of production of various crops as per the 4th Advance Estimates for 2006-07 vis-�-vis 2005-06 are given below.

Highlights of crop estimates

Foodgrains production at 216.13 MT is an all time record.

Soyabean production at 8.86 MT is an all time record.

Sugarcane production at 345.31 MTis an all time record.

Cotton production at 22.70 million bales of is an all time record.

Maize production equals the previous highest of 14.98 MT in 2003-04.
