The permanant account number (PAN) will be the sole identification number for all stock market transactions from July 2, 2007.
In a circular, the Securities and Exchange Board of India said it has advised all the capital market intermediaries to put in place the necessary systems and infrastructure and to also collect the copies of PAN cards from their existing and new clients to equip themselves for the transition.
