Anti-VAT strike: Decision on Oct 1

September 29, 2006 17:39 IST

The Federation of Associations of Maharashtra would take a decision on October 1 on its proposed strike against the state government's decision to bring essential foodgrain under the value added tax net.

The traders had earlier decided to go on a strike from October 2, to protest the implementation of VAT on essential foodgrain.

The exemption from VAT was to end on September 30 but the government has extended it till Diwali.

Traders said they wanted the exemption to be extended by six more months.

Bringing foodgrain, rice and oil under VAT would increase the prices of these essentials.
