You could soon be required to submit details of the expenditure on your child's hostel fees or school donation, club membership, gifts made or received and overseas travel while filing your income tax return.

The finance ministry is finalising amendments to the returns form for certain categories of salaried and all categories of non-salaried assesses.

The move to seek details on the expenditure of a tax payer has been prompted by instances where a tax payers' disposable income has been found not commensurate with their annual salaries and the nature of savings indicated in the returns filed.

Finance ministry officials said the details of the nature of expenditure could be obtained either in the form of a questionnaire where tax payers would be asked to tick the relevant bracket of expenditure on a particular item.

The questionnaire would be made an annexure to the return form and filing would be made mandatory for a certain category of tax payers.

The expenditure categories being finalised by the ministry are those which will not otherwise be captured through other data collection methods like the annual information returns.

"Donation paid to schools or money spent on hostels for children are usually without a receipt and hence do not get reflected anywhere. Memberships or donations for club memberships also sometimes are shown as administrative expense," the officials said.
