Demand for Swift, the latest offering from country's largest auto maker Maruti Udyog Ltd [Get Quote] has crossed 10,000 units mark as on Friday, company officials said on Saturday.

"The booking has reached 10,000 mark as of May 27 and on Friday itself the booking was about 1300 units," K Saito, MUL director (sales & marketing) said.

Saito said currently the company had production capacity of 200 units per day and using single assembly line.

"Our production facility is very flexible so increasing production would not be any problem as when required," he added when asked by when the company would be able to dilute the initial bookings.

The new sporty car which was launched in Japan last year will be rollout for retail delivery from June 6. The Indian Swift version has 1.3 litre petrol engine while the Japanese model was fitted with 1.5 litre engine.

Maruti 'Swift' @ Rs 3.87 lakh

Meanwhile, officials of the company said that they are not very keen to push for the car currently and would observe the market feedback. Swift is placed in the B+ segment and would compete with Hyundai Getz, Fiat Palio and Indica.

When asked about Swift's competing with Esteem or other models Saito said not everyone will go Swift there are consumers who wish to go for a tested vehicle and Esteem has its own advantages.

The ex-showroom price (Kolkata) of the three variants was Rs 3.87 lakh, 4.05 lakh and Rs 4.85 lakh respectively.
Saito remained mum on question of fuel efficiency of Swift when asked. The market size of the B+ is currently hovering at 5,000 to 7,000 units per month.

Meanwhile, Maruti Udyog Ltd is expecting flat export prospects for its cars during the current fiscal. In the previous year the combined company export stood at 49,888 units.

The company said that they would continue to send their engineers to Japan for localisation for their future proposed models. "We will reposition Maruti in both product portfolio and brand. Swift is answer to demands to new kind of consumers demand," Saito said.
