Tax mop-up rises to Rs 194,231 cr

Reflecting buoyancy in revenue sector, the central government's gross tax collection grew by over 18 per cent to Rs 1,94,231 crore (Rs 1942.31 billion) in the first nine months of this fiscal mainly due to robust growth in direct tax mop-up.

The gross tax collection improved from Rs 1,64,170 crore (Rs 1641.70 billion) during April-December 2003-04 with corporation tax, income tax and customs duties posting double-digit growth during the nine-month period, according to the figures collated by Controller General of Accounts.

The government has estimated a net tax mop up of Rs 2,33,906 crore (Rs 2339.06 billion)  for this fiscal.

The tax mop-up in December alone increased by 12.5 per cent to Rs 39,365 crore (Rs 393. 65 billion) compared to Rs 34,985 crore (Rs 349.85 billion) during the corresponding period last fiscal.
