Trade body Bharatiya Udyog Vyapar Mandal gave a call for a nationwide strike on Friday against the VAT system, implemented by 21 states from this month.

The organisation's president Shyam Bihari Mishra said the strike was called as the new tax system would lead to corruption, inflation and help multi-national corporations at the expense of small traders and enterprises.

He claimed that "all" trade organisations from various parts of the country have promised to extend support to the strike.

Traders had earlier gone for a three-day strike from March 30 in protest against introduction of VAT by 20 countries from April 1.
