Chennai creating most jobs

April 26, 2005 11:49 IST

The Ma Foi Employment Survey (MEtS) for April-June '05 has revealed that India Inc considers training low priority, with employee training averaging at about 6.28 hours per person per annum across all sectors as against a desired benchmark of 7 days.

The telecom sector continued to rank first closely followed by the IT and ITES sectors in the second and third places, respectively.

Southern India has topped the MEI index followed by Western, Northern and Eastern regions.

The top five states for the quarter are Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Haryana and the top five cities are Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune and Mumbai.

Tamil Nadu leads in hiring trends in the country, with Chennai topping the recruiting scene, the survey has revealed.

MEtS is a quarterly study on Indian employment trends and opportunities conducted by Ma Foi Management Consultants Ltd -- one of the largest HR services provider in India.

The current MEtS forecast is for the period of April to June 2005. This quarter's study covered 2,047 employers across 17 sectors in products and services category. MetS's specific focus this time was on training at workplace. An average of 6.28 man-hours of training is imparted per employee per annum. There is a wide divergence between various industry segments on training inputs given to their employees and generally considered a low priority.

Greater focus is provided to function specific training as against generic training. All sectors especially IT & ITES, BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance), auto & auto ancillaries, education, training & consulting and textiles have a very high focus on functional/role specific training.

Ma Foi Employment Index, which tracks the pace of recruitment activity, is at 1.28 per cent. The MEI for product segment is at 1.05 per cent and services MEI at 1.65 per cent.

The overall hiring has dipped as compared to last quarter. The reason is due to a general slow down in hiring trends seen across the country due to financial year-end and hiring plans for the year not yet being firmed by the companies.

The private limited companies hiring is at 1.77 per cent, while it is at 1.31 per cent for public limited companies. MEI is the highest at 3.04 per cent for companies with turnover up to Rs 100 crore followed by 1.75 per cent for companies with turnover of Rs 101 crore to Rs 500 crore and 1.20 per cent for companies with turnover of Rs 501 crore to Rs 1,000 crore. MEI was lowest at 0.27 per cent for companies with turnover over Rs 1,000 crore.

The highest growth is projected for companies with up to 100 people and Rs 100 crore turnover with projections at 8.51 per cent and 3.04 per cent, respectively.

The lowest growth is projected for companies over 1,000 people and Rs 1,000 crore turnover with projections a 0.27per cent and 0.76per cent, respectively.

The MEI in public sector is low at 0.12 per cent in comparison to 2.64per cent MEI recorded by private sector companies.

Ma Foi Employment Survey, India's First Employment Survey was launched in November 2004. This quarterly study on Indian employment trends and opportunities is the largest and comprehensive study undertaken to understand the employment trends in the organised sector for the first time in the Indian subcontinent.
