Indian Bank ties-up with MasterCard

November 17, 2004 18:17 IST

Public sector Indian Bank, in association with MasterCard International, on Wednesday launched its ATM-cum-debit card, allowing card holders to purchase goods and services from about 85,000 merchant establishments across the country.

The Indian Bank ATM card holders can also access more than 8000 ATMs in the country under the existing ATM sharing agreement the Chennai head-quartered bank has with 11 other banks, including SBI and Andhra Bank, M B N Rao, chairman and managing director, Indian Bank, said.

"It is 100 per cent real-time and online, leading to customers' accounts being debited online for transactions at point-of-sales at merchant establishments," he said.

The ATM-cum-Debit Maestro cards can be utilised worldwide for withdrawal of cash in addition to 8000 networked ATMs of other banks, Nitin Gupta, country manager (South Asia), MasterCard International, said.

MasterCard's 'Maestro' is the world's largest debit brand, he said. "Through the use of Maestro Cards and their personal identification number, customers can access their savings or their current account to purchase goods and services through any commercial establishment globally who participate in the network," Rao said.

In India, MasterCard has tie-ups with SBI and all its associate banks and Citibank for the Maestro debit cards, Gupta said, adding that MasterCard was accepted at over 22 million locations worldwide.
