Fee cut: IIM meeting on May 31

May 26, 2004 18:04 IST

Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh has called a meeting of the directors and the chairmen of all the six premier Indian Institutes of Management on May 31 in the backdrop of the previous BJP-led government's controversial decision on fee cut in IIMs.

The meeting was aimed at hearing the views of these prestigious B-schools in the wake of former HRD minister Murli Manohar Joshi's controversial decision to drastically slash the fees, the sources said.

The meeting will also discuss the issue of the institutes' autonomy.

In the backdrop of the charges of saffronisation of school textbooks, Singh has also convened a meeting with officials of National Council of Education, Research and Training on Thursday.

The NCERT curriculum, which was in the thick of a controversy under former HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, was expected to figure at the meeting, ministry sources said.

Singh, who assumed charge of his ministry on Monday, lined up a series of meeting in the coming days. He discussed with officials of National Institute of Open Schools on Wednesday.

Last year, Joshi had ordered the IIMs to cut their fees to Rs 30,000 a year, from Rs 150,000. Joshi had said he wanted to make the IIMs accessible to the poor. This had sparked off a raging controversy.
