Govt to revitalise sick PSUs
May 25, 2004 12:34 IST
The new Congress-led government on Tuesday promised to 'revitalise' sick public sector units and strictly adhere to the roadmap laid out for divestment of public sector units in the Common Minimum Programme to be unveiled this week.
"Many of the state enterprises are sick. My job will be to revitalise them. As far as divestment is concerned, I will go by the policies of my government," Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Minister Santosh Mohan Deb told reporters after assuming office on Tuesday.
Asked when would the government further offload its equity in Maruti Udyog, he said Maruti was government's baby and his ministry would keep in mind the interests of the country's biggest carmaker.
To a query whether BHEL would be privatised, Deb said: "I cannot say now."
The minister said he would also try to bring his constituency Silchar (Assam) on the world map of sports.
"I have keen interest in sports and I have constructed a stadium there which has been appreciated by cricketers like Kapil Dev," he said.
Along with the stadium, the overall infrastructure would also be developed, Deb said.
