The Central Board of Direct Taxes would introduce a new taxpayer scheme -- Online Tax Accounting System -- from June 1 this year.

A press release issued by the Income Tax Department said that the existing seven different types of multiple copy challans would be replaced by three types of single copy challan.

The single copy challan would have a main portion on the top and the taxpayer's counterfoil at the bottom. The bank will retain the top portion and return the counterfoil to the taxpayer after stamping it with a unique Challan Identification Number, the release said.
