The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday allowed the Faculty Council of the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta, which protested the central government order asking for fee reduction, to file additional papers and documents in support of its writ petition.

Justice Pinaki Ghose, allowing the Faculty Council to attach the additional documents with its original writ petition, fixed the matter for hearing on Thursday.

The Faculty Council filed the petition before the high court on April 28, challenging the legality of the March 26 board meeting of the institute, claiming that it was violative of the rules of the institute.

Dean of Faculty Dr Ashis Bhattacharya told PTI that in the board meeting, which authorised chairman Y C Deveshwar to draft a resolution pertaining to the fee reduction issue, the HRD ministry had appointed nominees, claiming that it was not in consonance with the rules of the institute.

The Faculty Council had already decided to charge fees at old rates from students. However, in case the Supreme Court, where the matter was now sub-judice, gives a ruling ordering fee reduction, then the excess money would be refunded to students at SBI interest rates.

The Faculty Council had also decided not to avail Rs 4 crore (Rs 40 million) provided by the ministry till the disposal of the case.
