Placements sizzle at IIM Bangalore

R Raghavendra in Bangalore | March 13, 2004 11:36 IST

The first day of placements at the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore has given a clear indication that the ongoing controversy between the IIMs and the ministry of human resources development will have no impact on 209 students who will be placed this year. Last year, 211 students were placed in 75 organisations.

Five world renowned consulting groups and investment banks visited IIMB on "Slot Zero" to make their pick. The visiting companies included AT Kearney, Boston Consulting Group, Capital One, Deutsche Bank and McKinsey.

The first day of campus recruitment in IIMB is known as "Slot Zero" wherein students get to pick some of the best companies in the world. On this day, certain companies are invited before hand, based on the priority of students.

Students who have always preferred these companies, if found eligible, will have to take a final call in their only chance.

Mostly, this means that they will not be part of the next phase of placements where they get the opportunities to pick and choose their employers. In fact, from the next phase onwards, some students even get multiple offers in a single slot.

Speaking to the Business Standard, Prof Ganesh N Prabhu, chairperson-placements, IIMB, said, "The first day witnessed some of the biggest consulting firms and investment banks visiting the campus. About 12-15 students would be placed at the end of the day. The positions to which these students are being recruited are mostly for senior management. Capital One and Deutsche Bank have offered positions in the United States and London, respectively."

Of 216 students who are graduating this year, eight are doctoral students who may opt for joining renowned schools as faculty or some such.

There will not be any placement activity on March 13, 2004. The first slot of placement is slated for March 14-15, 2004, second slot on March 16-17, 2004, third slot on March 18, 2004, and the final slot on March 19, 2004.
