July 15, 2004 13:51 IST
A new study which could add to outcry against offshoring says that 18 companies, including 11 headquartered in India and two in Russia, are aggressively seeking US state government contract work, primarily in information technology in at least 30 states.
The report, commissioned by Washington Alliance of Technology Workers, says of the remaining companies, five claim to be based in the United States, but have most of their facilities in India.
Listed among the companies, which include from small privately held firms to $1-billion behemoths, are Infosys Technologies, Satyam Computer, Tata America International Corporation (a subsidiary of the Tata Group), Suriya Technologies and ICICI Infotech.
Some of these firms, the study says, are bankrolled by American venture capital firms whose investors often include US pension funds.
"In other words, the retirement funds of American workers as well as their tax dollars are being used to help ship jobs overseas," the study conduced by Corporate Research Project says.
The study finds $75 million in contracts with these 18 firms have in about dozen states and lists 30 states which have some or all these companies on their approved lists of suppliers.
The report was released ahead of a meeting of National Governors Association beginning in Seattle in Washington State on Friday where offshoring is expected to be discussed.
