Star submits second set of clarifications

July 22, 2003 19:53 IST

Star India on Tuesday submitted a "voluminous" response to the second set of comprehensive clarifications sought by the government on its uplinkling application for its 24-hour news channel, but the information and broadcasting ministry is likely to take a final decision after consultations with the inter-ministerial group.

A representative from the Star Group on Tuesday gave its replies to the I&B ministry, sources said describing it as "voluminous".

The sources said prima facie it looked as if Star had addressed most queries but these would have to be examined in detail.

Meanwhile, a decision on whether to give it another extension from Thursday for temporary uplinking is likely to be taken on Wednesday.

Star News has been given four consecutive weekly extensions after the June 26-deadline for meeting guidelines for uplinking news channels from India expired.

The government had sought some more clarifications last week from it on issues including uplinking through Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd and information on its various shell companies.

The government had again asked Star to furnish details about the shareholders, MCCS' present owner and how they are raising equity from Rs 100,000 to Rs 4 crore (Rs 40 million).

It also asked about the relationship with associated companies, how they are being funded and how outsourcing is being financed.

The government also wanted Star to spell out details of the revenue and location of its offices besides how it became MCCS overnight and how Star's staff was transferred to it.
