Tight security arrangements for GIM

January 17, 2003 20:21 IST

Elaborate security arrangements have been made by police for the two-day Global Investor Meet, to be inaugurated by Prime Minister A B Vajpayee at the International Convention Centre in Kochi on Saturday.

The prime minister will be arriving at the naval airport on Friday night and would proceed to Taj Malabar where he would stay overnight.

About 3,000 police personnel have been deployed, while five superintendents of police and 40 deputy superintendents of police will oversee the security measures, police said.

The national highway, the bypass between Edappally and Aroor and the by-roads in the city would be fully under police control from Friday night.

Besides, tight security arrangements have been made in various hotels, each under the charge of one circle inspector.

Security has also been beefed up in the backwaters surrounding Kochi.

Police have also requested all the special invitees to bring passport, driving licence, permanent account number (PAN) card or voters card along with the official invitation card as proof of their identity.

Mobile phones, cameras and bags will not be allowed into the venue, where around 1,500 delegates are expected to converge.

An SPG team visited the international convention centre to oversee the security arrangements.

A host of VVIPs, including Chief Minister A K Antony, his cabinet colleagues and some Union ministers would attend the function.
