February 05, 2003 18:17 IST
A committee would be set up by the finance ministry to consider the long-pending demand of ex-servicemen for a 'one-rank one-pension' scheme.
This assurance was given to a delegation of Members of Parliament led by chairman of parliamentary standing committee on defence, Madan Lal Khurana, with Finance Minister Jaswant Singh on Wednesday.
Khurana, who submitted a memorandum to the finance minister, said that Singh has assured that the demands already forwarded by defence ministry would be considered sympathetically.
Under the one-rank one-pension scheme, a retired defence personnel of a particular rank would be entitled to same amount of pension irrespective of the year of retirement.
The delegation also wanted the government to take concrete measures to provide full medical cover to ex-servicemen and their families, similar to that of Railways.
Khurana said the 267 hospitals for ex-servicemen in the country should be upgraded and expanded, new poly-clinics should be opened and involve general hospitals in remote areas.
Besides, Khurana said the delegation has impressed upon the minister the need for an 'Ex-Servicemen's Commission' on the lines of SC/ST, minorities and women commissions.
