Lehman shifts BPO unit from India to US

In yet another instance of backlash against outsourcing, Lehman Brothers, a leading financial services company, has shifted call centres for its internal computer desk from India to the US complaining about the quality of service, media reports said.

The company had entered into a $70 million a year deal with Tata Consultancy Service and Wipro Limited to manage some of its information-technology operations.

Lehman stopped outsourcing its IT help desk, which handles employee reports of computer problems to Wipro about six weeks ago as it was not satisfied with the level of service, reports said.

A Lehman spokesman confirmed that the company had brought back the help desk to the US.

Lehman Brothers, however, continues to outsource other IT functions including software application development, applications support and some IT infrastructure support, they said.

The company's action comes weeks after Dell Computers last month stopped routing calls for corporate customers to its call centres in India after receiving complaints about the quality of service and difficulty in understanding accents.

Indiana State cancelled a $15.2 million contract with the Tatas last month for upgrading computer systems for one of its departments. While cancelling the contract, its officials had said they opposed using tax payers money to pay foreign workers.

Some other states are also considering legislations, which would bar state contractors from using foreign workers.
