April 10, 2003 17:30 IST

Karnataka government has decided to implement Value Added Tax from June 1, it was announced in Bangalore on Thursday.

Minister for Information Kagodu Thimmappa told reporters that the state expected the presidential assent to the VAT bill by this month end.

He said the government proposed to complete the formalities of forming rules for implementing the VAT during May and give effect to the new taxation laws from June 1.

The state, which had enacted a legislation to implement VAT from April 1, had to postpone the decision as it awaited the assent for the bill.
