Final decision on DPC power purchase on Oct 16: Bhujbal

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal justified the government's move to purchase electricity from the Dabhol Power Corporation, which at present is shut, but said a final decision in this regard will be taken at a Cabinet meeting on October 16.

Talking at a 'meet-the-press' organised at Mantralaya (state headquarters), on Monday, Bhujbal said the DPC has been shut since the last one year and the National Thermal Power Corporation has decided to revive it. Therefore, the state government had proposed to purchase the first phase of electricity at the rate of Rs 2.80 per unit, he said.

Saying that the rate was ''reasonable'', he said the state government could not get cheaper electricity than this. The state government has already been purchasing electricity at the rate of Rs 3.15 per unit from three projects, he pointed out.

Criticising the previous Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party government, Bhujbal said it was because of the previous government that the state had to carry the "burden" of DPC. If the state government had purchased the electricity to be generated in the second phase, it would have gone bankrupt.

At present, the state needs electricity to the tune of 2000 megawatt, he added.
