Narayana Murthy is Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of 2002

Infosys Chairman and Chief Mentor N R Narayana MurthyN R Narayana Murthy, Chairman and Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies Ltd, was voted the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of 2002, in Bangalore on Thursday night at a glittering ceremony, attended by India's top industrialists, professionals, and government officials.

Murthy will now represent India at the Ernst & Young's World Entrepreneur of the Year award ceremony in Monte Carlo, Monaco, in June 2003.

He will also represent India at the Ernst & Young's World Entrepreneur of the Year International Conference in Palm Springs, California, from November 21-24, 2002.

A panel of judges, chaired by Bajaj Auto Chairman Rahul Bajaj, selected Murthy. The eminent six-member jury included SBI Chairman Janki Ballabh, Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Rakesh Mohan, Bharti Enterprises Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal, CII chief economist Omkar Goswami, and Sanmar Group Chairman N Sankar.

In recognition of his invaluable contribution to the country through IT, the award's citation said Murthy was an icon for the new generation of Indian entrepreneurs.

"Murthy believes that beyond a certain level, personal wealth should be seen as an opportunity to make a difference to society. He has often said the private sector should take a lead in offering and funding education and health services," the citation mentioned.

BJP general secretary and former Union minister Arun Jaitley presented the award to Murthy.

Besides Murthy, MRF Ltd founder K M Mammen Mappillai was chosen for the E&Y Lifetime Achievement award, in recognition of making his company number one in the tyre making industry in spite of stiff competition from international players over the last decade.

US-returned cardiologist Naresh Trehan, who co-founded the Escorts Heart Institute in Delhi, won the award in the services' sector, while Moser Baer Chairman Ratul Puri bagged the award for the manufacturing sector.

Pramod Bhasin of GE Capital India was named the Manager Entrepreneur of the Year, and i-flex Solutions' Chairman Rajesh J Hukku got the award for the IT, Communications, and Entertainment segment.

Biocon India Group Managing Director Kiran Mazumdar Shaw was selected for the Healthcare & Life Science award. The Start-up Entrepreneur of the Year went to Daksh eServices head Sanjeev Aggrawal.

In his remarks on the occasion, Ernst & Young India Chairman Kashi Memani said entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of this country. The winners of our awards for this year are exceptional.
