Sonia opposes Nalco privatisation

Congress President Sonia Gandhi said on Thursday that her party strongly opposed the privatisation of profit-making public sector National Aluminium Company and assured her support to the agitating workers.

Gandhi said even if the Centre wanted divestment of any government-owned company it should keep 51 per cent to maintain the public sector character.

Accepting a memorandum submitted by Orissa MPs and major trade union leaders against the privatisation of the public sector unit, Gandhi said Nalco being the only public sector in Orissa, the people of the state were emotionally attached to this unit and the government should not take any decision against the emotion of the people.

Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Dr Manmohan Singh assured the delegation led by Ramchandra Khuntia, MP, that he would talk to the Prime Minister on the issue.

Coal and Mines Minister Uma Bharti had said earlier in the week that off-loading government equity in favour of the general public was the best route for divestment of Nalco and said that Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee would take a final decision on the issue.
