Amway scouting for more manufacturers

BS Bureau in Hyderabad

Amway India, part of the $5.1 billion Amway Corporation of USA, is seeking third-party manufacturers for a new series of personal care and cosmetics products it proposes to launch in the next few months.

The company already has a few contract manufacturers in India. The products include family bar soap, shaving cream and after shave lotion for men under the Persona brand and Artistry Basic skin care products such as cleanser, toner and moisturiser.

Amway India managing director and CEO, William S Pinckney, said here today that it was the company's policy to localise manufacture of most products it markets in a country.

In India, 80 percent of the 33 products in Amway portfolio in four categories - personal care, home care, nutrition & wellness and cosmetics - were being manufactured within the country through three third-party contract manufacturers.

"We help them in acquiring and using world-class technology and processes," he said.

Pinckney today formally inaugurated a third-party manufactured nutrition product, Nutrilite Protein Powder. It's being produced by Sarvotham Care Ltd.

So far the product was being imported. According to Pinckney, "It is for the first time that Amway opted for contract manufacture of nutrition products. In the US and China all products under the Nutrilite umbrella were manufactured only in Amways own facilities."

This indicates the world-class quality that Indian manufacturers can offer, he said, and added that Amway helped the local company in procurement of the state of the art plant and also the process.

The indigeneous manufacture has helped in bringing down the price of the product, he said.

Pinckney said Nutrilite is the world's largest dietary supplement brand and since its launch in India last year, four more products under Nutrilite umbrella had also been launched, thus making this cetgory the largest selling product for Amway India.

Even globally, Nutrilite products accounted for 45 percent of Amway Corporation's turnover of $ 5.1 billion.

Sarvotham Care Ltd managing director M Mohan Krishna said a key ingredient for Nutrilite Protein Product was being imported from Amway in the US, while the remaining ingredients were being locally procured.

Apart from Amway, Sarvotham was also contract manufacturing certain other products for multrinationals such as Johnson & Johnson.
