Jaya seeks Australian investment

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday urged Australia to invest in the southern Indian state, especially in the mineral-related sector.

Addressing a delegation led by Clive Brown, Junior Minister for Cultural Development and Minor Industries in West Australian province, Jayalalithaa underscored the vast mineral and skilled human resources that Tamil Nadu has to offer.

Jayalalithaa pointed out the western districts of Tamil Nadu had 25 billion metric tonne of lignite, and 52 billion tonne of magnesite deposits. Likewise, the Thanjavur belt and the Cuddalore region are known to have oil and natural gas deposits.

The chief minister said Australians have invested Rs 462 crore (Rs 4.62 billion) in 36 industries in Tamil Nadu, and there was scope for vast improvement, particularly in IT and genetic engineering, given the specialised human resources available in the state.

She sought cooperation from west Australian expertise in industrial wastes disposal. Brown promised cooperation in the field and offered to consider investments in minerals and other sectors as suggested by the chief minister.
