India, Afghanistan to boost economic cooperationIndia and Afghanistan on Monday discussed finalisation of a preferential trading arrangement and setting up of transit routes to give a major fillip to bilateral economic cooperation. This came up during wide-ranging discussions visiting Afghan Commerce Minister Sayed Mustafa Kazmi had with External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha as also with Indian business leaders. The two sides have already exchanged drafts of the PTA, which would boost trade and commerce between the two countries. Both sides agreed on the importance of establishing transit routes and creating the necessary supporting infrastructure particularly at the Chabahar port in Iran. This issue figured during talks Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal had with his Iranian counterpart during his recent visit to Tehran. India, Iran and Afghanistan have agreed to jointly work for the development of the Chabahar port. It was felt that prevailing atmosphere was conducive for trade and business between the two countries, an external affairs ministry spokesman told reporters. New Delhi is viewing Kazmi's five-day visit as an important step in continuing expansion and strengthening of Indo-Afghan relations.
