Gates to invest Rs 500 cr in India development centre

On his maiden visit, Microsoft co-founder and chairman Bill Gates announced, on Thursday, plans to invest Rs 500 crore (Rs 5 billion) on infrastructure and workforce at the firm's development centre over the next three years.

Briefing the media at the Microsoft India Development Center (MIDC), located at Hi-tec city, near Hyderabad, the chief software architect said the workforce at MIDC, which is presently 150, would go up to 500 by the year 2005.

''This centre is playing a critical role in developing products and technologies for the three strategic areas for Microsoft -- .NET platform, Windows and Enterprise Storage. The team has already demonstrated that they can develop very high quality products.''

On his interaction with the MIDC team, Gates said ''I am very confident that they will continue to make important contributions to Microsoft by developing great products and technologies.''

Gates said his firm was looking at India with a long-term perspective to generate revenue as it saw potential for a large growth in PC sale.
