IDBI asks DPC for details of plant chips

Indian lenders have asked the bankrupt energy trader Enron-promoted Dabhol Power Company to intimate the address of the place where it has stored electronic chips and coded computer drives used for plant operations, the Lok Sabha was informed on Thursday.

"IDBI (Industrial Development Bank of India) has advised Dabhol Power Company to intimate the address of the place(s) where the computer drives and records are kept," Minister of State for Power Jayawanti Mehta said in a written reply in the Lower House of Parliament.

She said DPC has informed IDBI that some electronic chips and coded computer drives have been removed for security reasons and stored elsewhere in India.

However, all the critical documents and records are in London with DPC's counsel in connection with the arbitration proceedings with various (Indian) government authorities.

"DPC has also informed that no original documents or records have been destroyed, but to minimise storage costs, the company undertakes destruction of duplicate records from time to time," Mehta said.

IDBI has asked DPC "to assure that they (computer drives and records) have been preserved in the manner required and that inspection of the assets removed and records would be given to the lenders and persons authorised by the lenders, whenever required," she said.

Enron removed crucial computer chips and records from the $2.9 billion Dabhol plant site in Maharahstra after it stopped production following the state's refusal to buy expensive power from it.
