Amitabh, Shah Rukh amongst top I-T defaulters

As many as 132 film personalities and companies, including Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Jaya Prada and Sujatha Films are among the major income tax defaulters in the country.

The dues which stood at a total of around Rs 1.05 billion in June last year, however, have shown a decline in 53 cases, Minister of State for Finance Gingee Ramachandran said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Friday.

While Big B's Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd still owes the highest amount of Rs 177.7 million, the mega star himself has paid Rs 7 million.

Shah Rukh Khan owes Rs 24.46 million, Sujatha Films has to pay Rs 62.49 million, and Jaya Prada has defaulted to the tune of Rs 3.31 million, he said.

Income tax dues against top 120 companies stand at Rs 155.88 billion. Giving the figure for June last year, Ramachandran said that the taxes remain outstanding due to several reasons such as tax demands being in dispute, appeals before appellate authorities and stays granted by them.

Outstanding income tax dues collected from these companies last year amounted to Rs 16.24 billion, he said.
