A-I files forgery complaint against commercial director

Air-India has filed a criminal complaint against its commercial director V K Verma, charging him with cheating and forgery, police sources said on Thursday.

A-I filed an FIR (first information report) on January 13 against him at Santacruz police station, Mumbai, alleging that Verma had submitted forged certificates while reporting sick in 2000.

The certificates produced by him were referred by the airline to All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi for scrutiny. The chief medical officer of the hospital had opined that they were forged, the FIR alleged.

Verma has been charged with various offences such as section 466 IPC (forgery), 468 IPC (forgery for the purpose of cheating), 471 IPC (using as genuine a forged document) and 420 IPC (cheating), the sources said.

An A-I spokesperson when contacted said the law will take its own course. Company rules, he added, were applied to all irrespective of the status of the employee in the organisation as decided by the vigilance department after due investigations.

Verma was unavailable for his comments and all efforts to contact him proved futile.

Verma was earlier chargesheeted in March last year by the then managing director M P Mascarenhas for his prolonged absence. He was, however, reinstated by the ministry last May.
