ITDC to sell four more hotels soon

Four more hotels, including three in Delhi, owned by the India Tourism Development Corporation Ltd are on the verge of being sold, a top executive of ITDC said on Tuesday.

ITDC owns 26 hotels, six joint ventures with state governments and four restaurants in the country, of which 18 hotels had already been sold by the central government under its divestment policy, ITDC chairman and managing director Ashwani Lohani told a news conference in Chennai.

"It is for the Government of India to decide the fate of the remaining four hotels, three in Delhi and one in Mysore," he said.

Lohani said after the September 11 attacks last year in the United States, the number of foreign tourists visiting India has slowed down. "Tourism industry was hit because of the incident, but it is now recovering."

The number of foreign tourists who visited India during 2000 totalled 2.6 million (26 crore).

Answering a question, Lohani said ITDC had set a revenue target of Rs 250 crore (Rs 2.5 billion) for the current year. The strategy included entering into new areas like consultancy and printing of brochures, producing films and sound and light shows for state governments.

MoUs had already been signed with state governments of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Delhi Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, he said.
