P Shankar will be the new CVCPlanning Commission Secretary, P Shankar, will be the new Central Vigilance Commissioner succeeding N Vittal whose tenure ends early next month, informed sources said on Monday. This decision was taken at a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and attended by Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani and Leader of Opposition Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi. Shankar, who will have a four-year term as CVC, was recently in the news when he had put in his papers wanting to quit the service after he had resigned as Chief Secretary in Tamil Nadu in the midst of resentment among IAS officials on the way they were being "treated" by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Later, he withdrew his resignation and joined the Planning Commission as secretary. The Union Cabinet had on August 6 passed a resolution paving the way for the appointment of a successor to Vittal. The resolution was necessitated as the ordinance governing appointment of CVC and other Vigilance Commissioners had expired in December last. "It is a great honour. Let me collect my thoughts and then react," Shankar said when contacted. Vittal described as "an excellent choice" the decision to appoint Shankar as his successor.
