Take over Dabhol plant, panel urges Maharashtra govt

The energy department related committee of the Maharashtra legislature on Wednesday recommended that the state government should take over and activate the first phase of the Dabhol power project.

This should be done to overcome the acute energy shortage in the state, the committee said while tabling its report in the Assembly in Mumbai.

Instead of naphtha, distillate should be used as fuel, the committee -- headed by veteran Nationalist Congress Party legislator Shankarrao Kolhe -- recommended. The second phase of Dabhol power project should be undertaken by the National Thermal Power Corporation, it stated.

The committee also recommended that the trifurcation of the state electricity board should be done in a phased manner.

The Maharashtra State Electricity Board should be given three years to bring down the transmission and distribution losses to 16 per cent from the existing 37.5 per cent.

Similarly, the board should undertake a massive drive to recover its pending dues to the tune of Rs 70.06 billion as this would help the loss-making MSEB to bring down its deficit, the committee added.
