A-I replaces metal cutlery with plastic

In line with foreign airlines, Air-India has replaced metal cutlery with plastic knives, forks and spoons on its flights to the US and United Kingdom.

This is in compliance with the security directive issued by both the countries, A-I sources said in Bombay on Tuesday.

The replacement follows reports that hijackers of the flights which crashed into New York's World Trade Centre and the Pentagon in Washington last week used metal cutlery as weapons, they said.

Meanwhile, in a statement in Bombay, A-I advised all passengers travelling to London, New York and Chicago to refrain from carrying items ranging from canned food to metal knives in their baggage as per security guidelines issued by Federal Aviation Administration for airlines flying to US.

The prohibited items were canned food, opaque and sealed plastic and foil packets, dairy and milk products like barfi, pedas, meat products, narcotics, drugs, plants, seeds, fruits, vegetables, soil, live insects, pets, fish, wildlife, leopard skin coats, matches, metal knives, pocket knives or scissors of any size or any other security restricted articles.

It said in view of enhanced security requirements by FAA, the passengers were required to check in at least four hours before the scheduled departure of their flight to USA.

The check-in counters would be closed 90 minutes before departure.
